This Saturday March, 20th, is NYC’s first annual Macaron Day.
What is a macaron you ask? A macaron is a tiny round, colorful, and delicious French pastry, with a crunchy outside, soft inside, and creamy center. They are so popular in France, they even serve them in McDonald’s! Just like we have our intense local debates about the best bagels and pizza in NYC, Parisians argue over what patisserie puts out the best of these little meringue sandwich cookies.
One of the best places to get Macarons on this of the Atlantic used to be Payard Patisserie in the UES. Unfortunately, the restaurant and bakery that created some of the best confections in NYC lost it lease and closed its doors a few months ago. Read the rest of this entry »
Ever accidentally walk into a BYOB (bring your own booze) restaurant, and end up saving a fortune on the bill? Drinks are what kill you, so if money is tight right now, instead of going out less, why not just go BYOB?
A great Thai seafood house that not only serves tasty spicy dishes, but lets you wash it all down with a Colt 45 you brought from home, is Catch de Fish. Catch de Fish is a Union Square restaurant, conveniently located a few doors down from a liquor store, where you can pick up a few bottles of wine before dinner (just in case you prefer to wash down your chili sauce with vino instead of malt liquor). According to its BYO rules, you are allowed one free bottle for every two guests and then there is a $5 per-bottle corkage fee. The policy is rather lax however; on a recent night 6 people shared 4 bottles without the extra charge, and lots of tables had bum bottles on them which they weren’t charged a fee for. The food is just as fantastic as the BYO policy, with anything covered in their green curry sauce being highly recommended, as well as the chef’s spicy rice and their amazing garlic bread! When we heard that Sirio Maccioni’s esteemed Le Cirque, the old school fancy French midtown institution, was having a Halloween party a few months back, we figured it was a once-off excuse to bang regulars out for a few extra bucks for the opportunity to eat their Dover Sole while wearing an eye-patch. Turns out, the bash was such a smashing success that they have turned it into a regular Friday night party for their rich friends, who are too lazy to trek below 14th Street, complete with a doorman, C-list celebrities, and downtown DJ Francesco Civetta. Expect an uptown crowd in blazers and a late-night menu served till 2 a.m. that bizarrely includes both caviar, and sliders. Read the rest of this entry »
Sophia Tavolacci is a sick little girl that needs our help. This poor 2-year old has been diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare and very life threatening disease.
You can help Sophia by doing what you might normally do this weekend anyway, going out with your friends. There is a charity fundraiser being held for her this Sunday, Dec. 20th, at 10pm, at M2 in the old Mansion on 28th Street. Read the rest of this entry »
Mad food scientist Wylie Dufresne is now serving bagel flavored ice-cream, that looks like a real bagel, at his downtown restaurant WD-50. Are we supposed order it for breakfast or dessert? (Serious Eats)
It is the time of the year where nothing hits the spot and warms you up better than a hot bowl of soup. Check out 50 of the city’s tastiest soup offerings. (NY Mag)

Beef lovers looking for a great piece of meat while escaping from the classic steakhouse decor and same old boring sides must treat themselves to a dinner at Quality Meats. Executive Chef Craig Koketsu has teamed up with Alan and Michael Stillman (Smith & Wollensky) to create a unique dining experience based on modern interpretations of familiar steakhouse dishes.
Chef Koketsu’s menu features steaks that are sourced only from Milton Abeles and Strassburger Meats, two of NY’s oldest family butcher shops. If you are dining as a group, the Shellfish Bouquet will not dissappoint. From lobster, to some of the best ceviche and crabmeat you will ever taste, this starter is a must. The 24oz. Rib-eye will leave you speechless as it is cooked to perfection; ask for medium-rare and you will be actually eating a medium-rare steak. As for sides to pair with your meat, be sure to try the Quality potato and the Gnocchi & cheese. If you still have room for dessert, the banana cream pie is to die for. We recommend trying it even if you think you have eaten to the max; its that good.
The space was designed by AvroKO (Stanton Social). “Interior details include an homage to a traditional “meat locker” interior with finished walnut planks covering the length of the downstairs dining room wall, butcher block end-grain wood as the primary material for the staircase, and vintage market scales that have been transformed into a lighting installation in the upstairs dining room.
Location: New York City. (Details posted here the night before. Get ready to be surprised.)
Time: 10AM. Be there or be sober.
It is that time of the year again boys and girls, the one day of the year we get to dress up like Santa and reign havoc on NYC, by drinking and spreading cheer. Santacon is basically a bar crawl convention / food drive, where revelers get dressed up, donate food to the needy, and get drunk, just for the fun of it. There will also be great Santa activities like naughty Christmas carols (so make sure to bring your song book) and much more!
If you’ve never been and have nothing to do this weekend, check it out, it really is an experience.

We might not have skiing in this town, but we do have the mother of all NYC tourist winter sports, ice skating at Rockefeller Center under the Christmas tree. What has this holiday tradition been missing all these years that other winter hotspots like Aspen, Vale, and the Swiss Alps have? Well apres ski of course, or in this case apres skate! Don’t worry though, Igloo Bar is the new pop-up bar in Rockefeller Center, that has been set-up to take care of all your “I busting my a** ice skating and need a drink” needs.
In addition to holiday named cocktails, this Eskimo’s retreat also serves a casual menu and hot chocolate for the kids. Igloo Bar is set up in the Rink Bar space which is always a bustling outdoor after work happy hour spot in the summer. Expect fewer locals here now though as the crowds of tourists and 5th Ave. shoppers have caused the people who work around here to migrate further south for their winter drinking needs.
